Kyra Cumming

Born on the Central Coast into a musical family, where my Nan and Pop had an Irish bush band, I was surrounded by musical influence which I then began my musical journey playing the clarinet in Year 3. In 2010, I moved to the Gold Coast and continued my involvement in the school instrumental music program playing multiple instruments and choir throughout my school years. I attended Palm Beach Currumbin High School as part of the music excellence program, which provided me with incredible opportunities, including workshops with industry professionals and the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music. In 2018, I started my studies at Southern Cross University, graduating with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in sound engineering and vocals. It was during university that I discovered my passion for DJing, which began as a hobby but has since grown into a source of amazing opportunities.

About Kyra

Kyra aka ‘DJ Kira Sunday’ is a familiar face around Byron bay, known for her energetic and fun sets tearing up d floors left, right and centre. Supporting for Artists such as Groove Armada, Hermitude, Bag Raiders, Running Touch, What So Not and more she has also appeared at Splendour in the Grass, Red bull and Smirnoff stages and Need2Freak alongside Little Fritter and Wongo. Taking the Byron music scene by storm, while collecting up local residencies at every venue and more, she pushes the boundaries of what's possible behind the decks.

I am passionate about sharing my journey in music and empowering the next generation of artists. I graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Contemporary Music, driven by a long-held desire to become a music teacher. While I initially took a different path, my experiences have shaped my perspective and enriched my understanding of the industry.

After graduating I worked as a sound engineer at the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay, where I honed my technical skills and developed a deep appreciation for live music. Currently, I am working as a National and International Tour Manager for DJs, bands, and festivals, which has allowed me to travel the world and witness the vibrant tapestry of the music scene.

I have a strong focus on supporting and promoting females in the industry especially empowering female DJs and advocating for gender equality in the music industry. I believe in the importance of representation and strive to create an inclusive environment where all voices can be heard.

I am excited to share my experiences, knowledge, and insights with students, fostering their creativity and helping them navigate their own paths in the music world. Together, we can explore the art of music and the diverse opportunities it offers.
